First 5K Family Run

Today was our first Family and Friends 5K and it was awesome !!!

We all gathered in Hyde Park Square in Cincinnati for an easy and flat run. It was a little chilly but everybody made it. All the teammates were there. Other friends joined us. Thanks to Marion and Matt for having shared this time with us.

We were led by the little one of the group, Marina, and trust me, she settled the pace. Everybody enjoyed and had fun. We finished our run with a fresh brewed coffee and this was needed ;-)

Can not wait till the next one !

Thanks Team !!!

Max

On your mark, get set, GoooOOO !!!

The 2015-2016 season has begun !

ToB brunch to start the season with a European push - Was it European ?!
The little growing TJ79 US team met for a brunch last Saturday and discussed the upcoming season. This past season has been terrific with amazing events and performances that include Marc and Matt at the Barcelona Ironman, Carine and Grace at the Dayton half-marathon, Jeff at the Grand Teton half-marathon and much more...
This year has been settled with great team training session. The famous Lunken airport loop for fractionated training and our comfy Ault Park for proprioception sessions will be at the "rendez-vous", In addition, there will be extra-training with MTB and swimming sessions that will add another flavor to it.
Let me give you the heads-up for this upcoming year.
We will start with the TOPO trail winter series (http://www.topoadventuresports.org/), followed by the annual mini-heart marathon in Cincinnati in March (www.heartmini.org).
About a year ago, we ran the VR Smoky Mountain half-marathon and we want to repeat that experience but in another national park. We are planning to run both the Grand Teton and the Yellowstone half-marathons. They are a week apart so we should be able to enjoy quality time together.

The big challenge for the team next year is going to race across the Bluegrass State in a 200 miles team race: That is going to be the Bourbon chase. Let me get that right: it is not going to be 200 gallons of Bourbon but just 200 miles of pure asphalt. I do not know which one taste better !

This is going to be a great year !
In closing, I would like to thank the Oria family and especially Marc. I am sure that I am speaking on behalf of everybody. Marc put a lot of effort in creating a family-like environment where everybody enjoys. This is working and thank you for bringing that here !

Hugs !

Max

A winter hopefully under the sign of MTB...building up the legs for spring!!

Finally, more and more of us have finally understood that MTB is fun and really useful to get good legs and cardio for spring and next season.

So far fall has been really good and dry.

Four of our teammates (David, Jeff, Marc and Matt) went on this last sunny Sunday for a short MTB ride on Mitchel Memorial Trails!!!

No crash and a really good time riding in woods with friends.

Hopefully the weather won't be too snowy this winter and allow us to spend time outside

Dayton River Corridor Classic 2015 - Half Marathon

Before running the Cincinnati Flying Pig Half-marathon, I told myself it would probably be my last half marathon. …But after the race, I was already thinking about the next one … it’s like a drug! OMG I’m addicted now!

My friend Grace and I decided to run the Dayton Corridor River half-marathon, on October 11th. After the tough and hilly half-marathon in Cincinnati, let’s do the one in Dayton, known to be a mostly flat course and so, easier to break our own record! I finished the flying Pig in 2h07m so, for this one my goal was to finish in 2 hours (or less!).
I trained all summer, 4 to 5 times/ week, switching between running, spinning/cycling class and circuit/high intensity training. I’ve found the inspiration and motivation through my “Super Ironmen” friends, Marc and Matt who train every day!! I didn’t want to disappoint them.
After 3 months of training, the race day was finally here! The weather was perfect! Sunny skies and the temperature was around 10/12*C.  I wore my Jovent running tank, got my camel back, a small apple sauce pouch in case I needed sugar (the race didn’t provide any food during the run) and my running playlist on my phone. I am so ready to run!

It was a small race, less than 400 runners. I chose my pace group, between 1h50 and 2h, that way, I could start a bit faster and if I couldn’t keep up, I could join the following group and be able to finish the race in 2h.  Few minutes after the national anthem, the gunshot went off and the race started! I was so excited and nervous. My objective was to do better than my previous half-marathon but I also wanted to enjoy the run.

I started the first 3miles a bit faster than I planned to. I wasn’t sure if I could keep that pace for 10 more miles! I tried to keep the rhythm and stay as close as possible from the 1h50 pacer guy. The course was in a park near the river, surrounded by trees with green, yellow and red leaves, it was gorgeous! Making the run more enjoyable. Around mile 7 or 8, I couldn’t stay close to the pacer and I started to worry to be passed by the 2 hour pacer. I was half way through, I couldn’t slow down now! No way! I kept the motivation and pushed myself to keep a good pace.

The last 2 miles were the most challenging! I started to feel hungry and needed sugar. L  I was so close to the finish line. As I said before, the race didn’t provide any food during the run. Luckily, I had a small apple sauce pouch in my camelback. J Haha!

Finally, the finish line was close! Only few feet away! Once I crossed it, I felt so happy and couldn’t believe in my finish time. 1h50m51s! It was better than I expected!  ….and realized that the 1h50 pacer was running way faster! So thank to him, he pushed me to run faster!

Then, doing my stretching and waiting for Grace (hoping that she would be fine), the organizers called me on the stage…my first thoughts were  “Did they call me? …Was it my name?” …”May be something happened to Grace?” (I was her emergency contact). None of that, they called me because I got the 2nd place in my age group! I was so surprised! Unbelievable! (…No, we were not only 2 girls in my age group :-p)

Overall, it was a great day, I had fun running this half marathon. I really enjoyed it and I am proud to belong to the team Jovent!

Obviously, as expected, now, I am thinking about my next half-marathon! J Yellowstone in June? This one is a tough one!
May be a full marathon in 1 or 2 years?

-Carine-

Doing a half marathon was always in my bucket list which I never found a motivation to fulfill. After hearing all the amazing training and race stories Carine had with her Jovent79 teammates, I signed up my first half marathon-flying pig (Well, persuasive Max and Matt helped too) this spring. And it turned out to be one of the most inspiring journeys in my life! I couldn’t forget every emotional and inner self -searching moment during the whole race; so when Carine talked about Dayton River Corridor Classic race, I was immediately on board.
Due to the hilly course and lack of core training, I developed IT band syndrome after flying pig. It had been manageable during the whole 2 month training but somehow got worse 2 days before the Dayton race. The intense knee pain brought me into the self-blaming and Hamlet loop:” I should have blah blah”and”To be or not to be”.  But like most racers, you know you are doing it by the end of the day no matter what.  With an IT band wrap, painkiller and enormous supports from Carine, I stood at the start line thinking it would be another incredible memory if I could conquer my own fear.
It was a scenic course, without cheering crowd, most of time I was running on a nice path by myself.  The knee pain started bothering me after 4 miles so I slowed down a little bit and failed to keep up with the 2 hour pacer.  However, it was a good surprise that I stopped to pay attention to the pain after 7 miles and only focused on finishing each mile. It was about that time I saw Carine turning back with great pace; there weren’t many runners before her so I was extremely proud of her. We exchanged a high five and I was fully charged again. There was a big hill 2 miles before the finish line that made me almost give up. Through thinking of those training sections and friends’ encouragement, I refused to take defeat lying down at that moment. Then I saw the finish line; that was it, the emotional moment that I was looking for, a sense of accomplishment!

My time record was 02:17:48, which was kind of disappointed cause I was aiming for less than 10:00 pace considering I did 11:00 pace at flying pig.  Yet one of many reasons I love about running is that it’s a competition with yourself. All these disappointments and unsatisfying regrets will eventually turn to motivations and fuel for next challenge!

Through running I realize I was born to love challenges. All the pain and suffering merely help to build up the fulfilling and satisfying power gained in the journey. I am a lucky girl who gets the chance to experience this kind of infinite joy. I like to thank Marc and Matt’s inspiring stories, Max’s persuasion and most important, Carine’s company. It’s really comforting to know there are friends on the road with you! Yellow stone half marathon I am coming and hopefully full marathon in near future. This is the start of my running life and I have no intention of slowing down!

IronMan Barcelona 2015

13 months training just for one race just to demonstrate what you did during all the hard training sessions. Just to claim a result that makes us satisfied with the all year.
No one knows what we did………was hard, was tough with just one race in mind…. IronMan Barcelona 2015.
I can tell you some of the stories but as you can imagine, Cincinnati is not known for the good weather and the mild temperatures during winter! Hahaha
Matt and I trained 13 months under the instructions of Jaime Martinez program. He plans for us a very hard year. In his mind on his own words “You have to reach the Endurance from the Intensity”, that means that we always be in quality training with no trash or useless miles in our legs.
It was being a wile since I train focusing on the intensity all the time and gaining distance and endurance and more volume from the intensity on each session. These trainings kill the mind and also your body because always you are working in your limit. Thanks Jaime for your plan, thanks Jaime to be always with me in the good, the bad and the ugly.
I am gonna give you some of the numbers at the end of the year:

With these numbers and the good feelings in our legs, after the super compensation, after a long year, we initiate the race week. We flew to Barcelona and put our base in Cabrils, a small town in between Barcelona and Calella where the race starts.
I am at home and nothing else makes me happier, family and friends but more especially with all the Tri-friends and Tri-family “Triatlo Jovent 79” nothing make sense without them. I can’t imagine doing an IronMan without them. I started doing triathlon as an amateur and I love to compete with friends because for me triathlon and sport is part of my social life and social activities. My pass as a rower is gone and I want to enjoy sport as a primary nature and only I can do it with friends.

David, Ruben, Matt and I (all 4 from Triatlo Jovent 79) went the day before to check in our bikes and to set up all our stuff in boxes. We talk, chat and laugh, making easy the nervous before the race.

On October 4th at 7 am in the morning we met in Calella, before we had breakfast, we will need it later! Was dark but the bike park was full of people working on their bikes, checking everything prior the closing time of the bike park. We check our bikes always keeping an eye on the others because in between 2600 participants it’s easy to get lost. We went to the tent and put the wetsuit on us, vaseline and we went to test how cold was the water and to warm-up. The sea was a bit moved because the previous days the bad weather and storms were present. When I see the waves I realize that the swim will not be as fast as I expect.

We hug and took picture with other tri-friend that came to see us, Mamen, Lara, Toni and   Ariadna, thanks to support us at the very beginning.

This year, as other IronMan races they have different starting lines depending your time in the swim part. They call the rolling start. This avoids stress in the water and accidents. Also some people say that improves the bike section for drafting.
Matt stopped in 1:15 step and David and I moved bit more to the front to the 1:05 starting group. We are ready; we are in position to start our IronMan. More than a year waiting for this moment.  We jump into the water and the first wave hits in our faces, David was pulled back few meters and came out with the goggles completely out of his eyes. Oh man! This is not gonna be easy!.
For me was the first swim in open water with the swimsuit. I know that I was playing with fire but nothing that I can do now. The first part was easier because the current push us, but when we turn then I start fighting with the sea, was not that bad but without training in the open water I did what I have in my hands. I know that I was in a slow pace and my arms were at low frequency. Touch the sand at 1h 08’ and cross the pad at 1h 09’.  I am around 10’ slower than I have in mind and at that point I should do a good bike.
Transition with normality, not getting nervous and do all my stuff, around 5 minutes to be out with the bike. At that point I see Mar taking picture and yelling me! Wow she is there as always! But I didn’t expect her that early! I am surprise and also I didn’t understand how and why she is always supporting me on these things. Without her support and Marina’s support nothing is possible. Both of them encourage me and help me during the all year. I always really appreciate what they do for me and help me to make this thing real.
Ruben and David were in front of me and I will try to catch them on the bike or during the run.

Ready on the bike, 3 km transition 2 big laps from Calella to Masnou and 1 short loop from Calella to Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, in total 180km but my GPS gave me 179km. I plan to ride at 35km/h in average and if we loose some speed in the turns and during the 6km transition then I should ride around 36-38 km/h. That’s my plan and I followed like a robot, my feeling on the bike was very good, eating every 20km aprox plus some extras on the AIDs stations. The last small loop the wind starts blowing but no to hard, just to kill the average a bit. At the end of my ride 5h 10’ on an average bit less than 35km/h but still a good time for me.
I passed David on the bike but Ruben was doing and amazing bike riding it in less than 5h!!!
Was really nice to see Mar’s family with all the kids on the road supporting me every loop, every time that I passed them on Vilassar de Mar. Miquel, Magda, Miquel, Maria, Miqui, Bernat, Queralt and Maria thanks for your support, not only during the race, also during my stay in Barcelona and during the years. After the bike they came to Calella to see me running with my daughter that always ran with me to the finish line but with the new rules, she can’t do it! Really sad for the young ones, because in my opinion this kind of things give the feeling and the idea of what sport means in a good way. Hard work and perseverance always pays off.

Finishing the bike like never I did, with the legs ready to run, recovering during the last 3 km and focusing my mind on the marathon.
I did a really fast transition in less than 2 minutes and I was running the fist km at 4:35 pace but after 2 km something was wrong. My stomach was ok, I can drink and I can eat gels but my belly was cramped. Very weird feeling because was the muscles that didn’t allow me to run normal. After few kms (3-5) start having pain in my lumbar as a reflex. My pace starts being 5:30 and lower after 10-12 km till 6:10. Terrible pace for my plans. knowing that if I continue running at that pace I could not be bellow 10 hours.
I got pass by David and we shared few km together, he is always there and supporting me also when he is running the same competition! He makes me easier the first lap.
After that I decided not to stop a single time, not stop in any of the AID stations. I decided to grab the drinks but never stop or walk on it because if I do that my time will be really bad.
Eating and drinking as always, the kms fall into my feet. Around the 23-25 km Toni came to me running and offer me an Enantyum (painkiller and anti-inflammatory). My first thought was NO but what else can happen? Can be worsen than has being going? I take one, and I promise you that have an horrible taste! This made me throw up few km later but gave me relaxation on my belly muscles. Then I start running a bit faster but like one can run after 32 km in your legs! Hahaha
5 km before the finish line I passed again David, he was having bad time after some stomach issues as well. I passed him like a zombie and we didn’t talk too much! I feel bad because I could stay more time with him but my brain didn’t respond in a good way, only a sentence appears on it all the time “don’t stop, don’t walk” repetitively.
My close relatives were there, all the run, was amazing and very helpful to see them, they gave energy and push me to continue and not gave up when the things doesn’t run as I plan and I want to. It was their first Ironman and I know that is not easy to see me in that conditions. I know that they suffer every single race but also they are the most supportive family.
Last 2 km and boom!!!! The Cuaresma family giving me the last push to the finish line! I would love to stop and hug them! They are amazing!
I crossed the finish line in 10h 22 minutes, far from my idea to be bellow 10 hours but with the satisfaction to be at the finish line with my family and friends. Ruben crossed 10 minutes before me, David 3 minutes after and Matt 50 minutes later but doing a great time in his first Long Distance Triathlon.

We all 4 met inside the tent with our finisher medals and t-shirts. As always David drink 4 beers! Amazing! Haha he is a beast! We took pictures and laugh about what we just did. We are getting use and we think that this is normal but if you stop and think about what this entire IronMan means....... it’s crazy. Hours and hours of training to put our body in limits. And the terrible thing is that we are happy and we will repeat next year. I am sure that will be with them!!

The Jovent family were there all the time, not only the race: Moyano, Oscar, Pere, Pili, Pilar, Carri, Rafa, Nuria, Palo’s, Carlos, Josean, Marin’s, Maria, Paulo, Pere, Toni, Lara, Ariadna, Mamen, Cuaresma, Yolanda, Alexandra, Inigo, Chrsitian, Damaris, Miri.
And I want to give a special thanks to Joan Benach who is responsible of our success as a team and also my personal. He is always there for everything you need no matter what. This is really difficult to find in our real world!
Thanks to all of you that came to see, support, run, trust, yell and help during the race and always! Sorry if I miss someone, it is not my idea and is not personal.

I want to finish this long race report with one sentence that Matt said to me the day after the Ironman. “I really like your team in Barcelona, looks different, they support me and they not even know me” I told him that Triatlo Jovent 79 is always different and it's like a family! They never fail! They are always there to help and support you! This is what I want to build here in US..... Triatlo Jovent 79 spirit.

After 10 days of the race I can’t say that I am happy, I am a bit disappointed with myself because I didn’t make it as I want and as I have in mind. Was a very taught year and I want my own recognition for all the work I did. All of us know that in sport you cannot always get what you want, sometimes hits you and sometimes, very hard. Now depends on yourself if this hit bends your forever or makes you stronger.
My decision…………………….Altriman 2016 is on my way!!!!!!!!!

Long weekend at the Amish County and Cuyahoga National Park

Long labor day weekend mixing family, friends and sport. What else we can ask for?
less than a month for the IM in Barcelona Matt and I just start the last Mesocycle of our training plan. Before this one 8 crazy Mesocycles during the passed 12 month.
This 9th Mesocycle, maybe the most important one, is the one where we put everything what you did during the year to be ready, to be at 100% on a exact date (October 4th 2015). We start reducing the volume and give a bit of intensity on the sessions, more recovery between sets, more recovery during the week giving more quality to the sessions without losing the endurance.

Anyway, we ready for the weekend! ready to be out of Cincy and enjoy the beautiful places that we have around. We rent a house in Fredericksburg, a farm house in the middle of nowhere, just cows and cornfields said us hello. The perfect house for a Walking Dead episode.

Before the trip, run session: 1h set with a bit of intensity! No bad and ready to drive more than 3 hours till our destination, The Amish County.

With not many time for visits on Saturday we stop in an Amish Farm to see how they work and how they take care of the animals.
How fascinating to see all the farm animals specially how they take care of them.
The day is over and it's time for a good time eating the delicious meals that we bring from home, the perfect time to seat, laugh, discuss and enjoy with the company. We realize that no light is around us and how beautiful is the sky at night when no clouds or light pollution is present.

Sunday morning!!!! Time to start the party!
M&M woke up at 7 am and after a small and short breakfast we start riding towards the Cuyahoga National Park where the rest of the expedition will join us few hours later.
Was not an easy ride, rolling, stops, buggies with Amish going to church and hot and humid at the end. But is amazing that we rode for hours riding in parallel with no cars passing us. Also we take a trail for sport activities (bike, run, hike) that you can cross the state of Ohio from south to north without being in a road. No matters, we ride with the road bikes in the gravel but smooth trails, like we ride with MTB or CX bikes.
Arriving to the Cuyahoga National Park and start enjoying the wildness.
Strava Fredericksburg-Cuyahoga National Park
Family and friends start our hiking excursions visiting falls, rivers and cliffs

Perfect day for us: ride and hike with family and friends! What else in mind?

After two different trails visiting the park we return to our Walking Dead Farm and
Grill in the front porch good meat drink in g good beers as the Jovent 79 law say! haha

Labor day on monday we decide to spend our time visiting a Amish houses and school. We see how they live and how is their life's. After a good pit stop in an Amish restaurant we return to our nest in Cincy. A perfect resting day.

We always say that Jovent 79 it's more than a club, it's a family and we really are! Proud of it!
